Lee Dle observes how athletes in sports such as climbing, archery, and wrestling intuitively adjust and maneuver within unpredictable environments. Drawing from these embodied strategies, Lee explores sculptural thinking through material encounters, allowing physical matter to guide reflections on form, gravity, and the world it inhabits. Working primarily with glass, cement, plaster, and ceramic, Lee treats materials not as passive mediums but as active partners—often in tension with gravity and the artist’s own body. Her practice revolves around moments of negotiation, failure, and balance, visualizing the fleeting yet charged space between intent and accident. Through the conceptual lens of “freestyle”—a mode where improvisation is both liberating and precise—Lee reinterprets the language of sport and translates it into a sculptural syntax that embraces uncertainty and chance as formative elements.
